Fun, Shopping Savvy, Stylish, Mom 2.0, and Latinalicious are all adjectives that describe Ms. Latina and her online destination, Latina on a Mission! With content ranging from fashion, beauty, money, parenting, and a host of giveaways, Ms.Latina present her fresh perspective on the modern Latina lifestyle.
Urbane Perspective Magazine: So Ms.Latina, how did you get into blogging and what inspired you to create www.latinaonamission.com?
Ms.Latina: I’ve always enjoyed sharing and helping others. I used to volunteer for several organizations, however, when I became a single mother, it became more difficult for me to volunteer outside of the home. My children needed me, but I felt I needed something for myself. Latina On a Mission filled that void. Through my blog I was able to share the freebies, coupons and tidbits I found online with my family, friends, and co-workers.
UPM: Let’s focus on the blog name “Latina On a Mission”. Can you go into further explanation on how and why you came up with that blog title? What does it mean?
Ms. Latina: I called my blog “Latina On a Mission” because I’m a Latina on a mission! I’m on a mission to a better life! I feel that keeping a budget should not mean that you miss out on life and all the joys found in it. For that reason I like to showcase free ways to enjoy yourself (or as close to it as possible), while living life to the fullest. I am constantly searching for free family friendly events, free concerts, and free shows. I also showcase chic and cheap items that just make our life so much more enjoyable, because it just wouldn’t feel right without the perfect pair of jeans or stilettos!
UPM: How would describe Latina On a Mission’s brand and the content?
Ms.Latina: When I blog, I write as if I were talking to my family and friends, which means that you will find some Spanglish thrown in my posts. It’s a part of who I am so my writing reflects that. Yet I always give the English translation whenever I do so because I know there are some readers who don’t understand Spanish, just as some of my “real” friends may not speak Spanish. Hopefully, my readers will be able to pick up a word or two along the way!
UPM: What direction are you looking to take Latina on a Mission?
Ms.Latina:I think the world is my oyster! I won’t limit myself by getting too specific but I do believe that anything and everything is possible!
UPM:What other sites peak your interest and/or inspire your blogging?
Ms.Latina: I read all types of blogs! In fact, they’re the reason I don’t sleep as much as I should! I think I am totally hooked! I can’t list all of the blogs I visit here (or the list will take up all your space!) but you can check out the Blogroll on my blog.
UPM: What are some of your hobbies and how do you incorporate that into your blogging?
Ms.Latina: I love shopping for myself and my boys! In fact, I’m sure after looking at my site you’ll soon discover that I am constantly searching out new finds, testing them out and giving my Latinalicious readers a chance to win a couple of the items I review too!
UPM: How has the response been from your readers regarding your website?
Ms.Latina: I’ve had a wonderful response! I’ve even met a couple of bloggers IRL (in real life), and am happy to say that I can call some friends now!
UPM: Congratulations on your Latinos in Social Media Nomination. How do you feel about the relationship between Latinos and Social Media Networking or the internet in general?
Ms.Latina: I was extremely excited to be nominated as one of five Best NY Latino Tweeps! It was quite an honor to be recognized within my community as a rising star, along with all the other fabulous tweeters! Latinos are set to grow exponentially within the next few years, with Latinas playing an important role in the growth. The Selig Center has noted that the Hispanic buying power will reach almost $1.2 trillion by 2011! That’s a lot of dinero/cash out that advertisers could tap by advertising on blogs and other social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Bebo and MySpace! Like most women, our time is limited but our expectations aren’t. More of us are turning to the net for those answers, seeking out friend and family recommendations via social networks when making purchases. Companies and advertisers who recognize this will be able to prosper.
UPM: On your website I see that you are really into fashion and great deals, what are 5 fashion pieces that you MUST HAVE in your closet this Fall/Winter?
Ms.Latina: Hmmm this was such a hard question to answer since there are so many “Latinalicious” fashion and beauty products out there! If I have to make a choice I would definitely say a GREAT skin cream like Clarins, a sexy pair of PZI jeans cause they hug this Latina’s curves, my FRYE boots cause they are stylish AND comfortable, my purple Jessica Simpson Boots, and of course a Latinalicious coat to top it all off!
UPM: Thank you talking with us! Folks make sure you check out, Ms.Latina at Blogalicious09. She will be speaking on the Mom 2.0 Panel!
