Today the unemployment rate in America is extremely high. In fact, it is higher than it has been in a very long time. If you are unemployed, try not to get discouraged. Instead, use the time to build your career. You might be thinking – how can I build my career without a job? Well, consider taking advantage of opportunities for interim work. It has become increasingly popular in Britain. And, by interim work, we do not mean entering data and stuffing envelopes, because that will obviously not do much for your career. Instead, look for short-term project work. For many it these short time opportunities actually lead to full-time employment.

Taking advantage of contract work is a great way to test your skills and find the right job fit for you. It allows you to make money, while not being locked into to a job you may not like. Many people take the first job they get offered. However, there are opportunities out there to build your skills and find a better fit for you with interim work. In fact, there are 1.3 million people in America who are working with agencies today doing just that.

A good job agency can place you on interim projects. These projects vary in time. Some are to fill a need while a co-worker is out on maternity leave or when someone has suddenly quit. Sometimes the contract position turns into fulltime work. However, even if it does not, it is valuable experience that you can add to your resume. And, if you do not like it, you always have the option of moving on as well. It is a nice option for everyone involved.

When working with Temp Agencies, keep the following in mind:

·        You do not have to take any temp job they offer you. Instead, think about improving your CV.
·        There is a possibility that a big agency will turn you into a commodity. So, look for an agency that works in specific sectors that you’d like to work in.
·        Be proactive about your search for temporary work. The best contract work is not easy to come by – you usually have to work for it.
·        If you want to start a business or work for yourself, is it possible to work part-time?
·        Be useful. Anyone who is clever can be invigorating and a breath of fresh air to a business that has just hired you.
